CHAPTER 12

Liz realized on the drive home it was too late for her to call Iona Robles, the woman who claimed to be Alex’s mother. Even though she was incredibly curious about what was going on, it was also too late for her to check in on the other Robles and find out who they were.

They got back to Red Cedar just before midnight. “Thank you so much for everything,” Liz said to Gina, who had been doing some paperwork inside the lodge. “I know it’s been so difficult with the Robles demands. Here, this is for you from Roger and me.”

She placed an envelope containing $200 in Gina’s hand. “Once they’ve left, why don’t you take a couple of days off and enjoy yourself.”

Gina, who’d been looking a little tired, immediately brightened up. She hugged Liz. “Aw, thanks. You didn’t have to, but it’s much appreciated.”

Liz smiled back at her. “What do you think you’ll do? Maybe something to look forward to will help you get over the demands of Demanding Diana and Bothersome Bob.”

“Go get ‘em,” Liz said. While he was showering, she fixed him some coffee, eggs, and bacon. “I made you some protein for energy,” she said when he walked into the kitchen.

He stuffed her creations in a bagel, downed the coffee, which had cooled a little, put his laptop in his briefcase, and headed out the door with a determined look on his face.

Liz fed Brandy Boy and Winston and felt a little overwhelmed with all the new information she’d received the night before. “That Seth Williams,” she complained to Winston, who was nuzzling against her knee. “He just doesn’t know when to stop. Alleging there’s corruption in local government around here. Huh. He’s the walking definition of corruption! I wonder what Bob Salazar thinks about this.”

Bob Salazar was a Dillon County Supervisor, a good friend of Roger’s, and he’d been the best man at their wedding. Liz hadn’t talked to him for quite a while. Bob had been a big help when she was having problems with Seth in the past.

She’d talked to him at length about Seth, trying
